5 Honest Reasons I’m Skipping the New Nintendo Switch

Not sure if the Switch 2 is worth it? Here are 5 personal reasons I’m not upgrading—and why skipping the hype might save you money too.

Back in 2019, I visited my brother and his family in Texas. It was during that trip that I picked up my Nintendo Switch—excited, hopeful, and ready to dive into the world of portable gaming.

Fast forward six years: that same Switch is now gathering dust on my shelf.

So when I see the hype around the new Switch, I can't help but feel... indifferent. Not because it’s a bad console—but because I barely scratched the surface of what my current one has to offer.

Let’s break it down.

1. I’m Not Much of a Console Gamer

Most of my time is spent on PC. My gaming rig—built in early 2020—is still powerful enough to handle just about anything I throw at it. And to be honest, I prefer the keyboard and mouse experience over controllers.

Sure, there are a few titles that tempt me—Switch exclusives I can’t get on PC—but they’re rare exceptions, not the rule.

2. My Gaming Time Is Extremely Limited

Between working a full-time job and building a business on the side, my free time is precious. Gaming happens in small pockets, not marathon sessions.

When I do play, I reach for games that help me unwind—usually city builders or strategy sims on my PC. Not action-heavy titles that need fast reflexes and a dedicated console setup.

3. The Switch I Have Still Works Just Fine

Right now, there’s no must-have game that’s exclusive to the new Switch. Most upcoming titles are still compatible with the original model.

Sure, that will change eventually—new consoles always phase out the old ones—but until there’s a game I have to play that requires the new hardware, I’m in no rush to upgrade.

4. I Only Play Zelda and Pokémon

Let’s be real: I got the Switch for Pokémon and Zelda. That’s it. I’m not ashamed to admit it.

I’ve played Pokémon games since my Game Boy days and kept the tradition alive on the 3DS before finally upgrading to the Switch. Between those major releases? My Switch barely gets touched.

And that’s okay.

5. It’s Just Not Worth the Money — Yet

The buzz of new tech is exciting—we’ve all been there. But excitement can also be deceptive.

If your current Switch is gathering dust, or if you suspect a new console won’t change your gaming habits much... maybe hold onto your money. Wait until the time—and the game—feels right.

No shame in skipping the hype cycle.
